Why this Conference? Why Now?

Assessment is the heartbeat of great teaching. Yet too often, outdated grading systems distort the truth, erode student confidence, and exhaust teachers.

And the stakes have never been higher. Political tensions, economic shifts, and global pressures remind us daily that our future cannot depend on others. If we cling to outdated systems imported from elsewhere, we risk undermining our students’ confidence and potential.

That’s why the Canadian Assessment Conference exists, to chart a different path. Together, we can build assessment practices that put clarity, accuracy, and student confidence first.

At this event, you will:

↳ Experience excellence in practice with research-aligned strategies that are relevant and actionable.

↳ Learn how to put student confidence first by adopting approaches that uplift, not diminish.

↳ Seek truth through accuracy by building systems that give a trustworthy picture of learning.

↳ Harness clarity as power to simplify assessment so every student and educator knows the path forward.

This is about more than grades. It’s about who we are as a nation, and who we choose to become.

Meet Your Speakers

Our lineup isn’t open-mic. Every speaker was hand-selected because they have receipts: real results leading assessment and grading transformation in classrooms, schools, and districts across Canada and beyond.

This isn’t a series of hobby talks or professorial lectures. It’s a carefully curated group of leaders who have proven, again and again, that modern assessment practices work in multiple contexts and they’re here to show you how.

Tom Schimmer

Keynote Speaker

Tom Schimmer is a global leader in assessment reform, partnering with schools in more than 25 countries to transform grading practices. Author of 11 books, including Grading from the Inside Out, Tom is known for turning complex research into practical strategies educators can use immediately.

Natalie Vardabasso

Keynote speaker

Natalie Vardabasso is the author of Rehumanizing Assessment and founder of the Empowerment Ecosystem, a community that helps leaders spark grassroots assessment revolutions. She’s also known as the voice behind Assess That and #EduCrush, where she amplifies educators driving real change.

Karley Alleyn

Karley Alleyn is a teacher and consultant whose research on assessment identity helps educators uncover the beliefs that shape their practice so that they can write a new narrative. She is the creator of the Assessment Accelerator, a mentorship program that drives identity-based change and support teachers in implementing competency-based assessment in their classrooms.

Josh Ogilvie

Josh Ogilvie is a dynamic educator, speaker, and assessment leader who specializes in transforming how Physical & Health Education (PHE) teachers think about assessment and grading. He serves as President of PHEinBC and has developed evidence-based resources and professional learning that uplift students through clarity and integrity in grading practices.

Danielle Paloposki

Danielle Paloposki is a veteran educator, former Director of Teaching & Learning, and current consultant who helps schools shift toward purpose-driven, student-centered assessment systems. She has been deeply involved in implementing proficiency scales and standards-based grading in high schools, aligning assessment philosophy with provincial policy to put learners at the center.
